Rabbit à la Berlin dir. by Bartosz Konopka

rabbit

Thursday, August 26th, 2010 at 8.00 pm

Polish Club of San Francisco

3040 22nd Street, San Francisco, CA 94110, http://polishmovienite.blogspot.com

Rabbit à la Berlin is an important lesson of history that a system of order intended to produce one result will often give birth to something entirely unexpected. So it was with the Berlin Wall, which in fact, consisted of two separate walls, one on the east and one on the west with a 120-kilometre strip of land between them. The enclosed patch was unintentionally converted into a kind of rabbit reserve as the walls encircled the lush green meadows of Potsdamer Platz and cut its rabbit population off from both escape and predators. But then one day the walls came down and the rabbits were suddenly freed from a restrictive system, albeit one to which they had become accustomed. Told in the style of a nature documentary, with a captivatingly dreamy tone and a tongue-in-cheek nod to the story's allegorical significance, Rabbit à la Berlin provides a fascinating history lesson told through the eyes of animals.

Rabbit à la Berlin was among the three titles nominated to the Documentary Short Subject category for the 2010 Academy Awards.

Rabbit à la Berlin is Polish-German coproduction of Anna Wydra MS Films, Telewizja Polska and ma.ja.de Filmproduktion, MDR, RBB in association with ARTE, YLE, Lichtpunt, VPRO. Film is supported by Polish Film Institute, MEDIA Programme and Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing.

100 Voices - A Journey Home

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010 at 7.00 pm

100Voices

"100 Voices: A Journey Home" is a compelling and moving musical documentary that uniquely tells the history of Jewish culture in Poland. It highlights the current resurgence of Jewish culture through the personal reflections and musical selections of a group of cantors from the Cantors Assembly and acclaimed composer Charles Fox, who made an important historical mission to the birthplace of Cantorial music. The documentary will give generations the opportunity to learn about and re-embrace the Jewish culture that produced one of the most artistic and educated societies that once flourished in Europe. Above all, the Program will celebrate the resilience and the power of Jewish life, while telling the story of two people who shared intertwined cultures.

On Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at 7 pm (local time) in 500 theatres nationwide, you will experience 100 Voices: A Journey Home, a documentary based on the largest group of Cantors to ever return to Poland, where it all began, paying homage to the Cantorial tradition.

The documentary will be preceded by an exclusive specially produced mini-concert with the Cantors featuring 20th Century contemporary American music. It essentially shows the audience the legacy of Polish Jewish culture that crossed the ocean and flourished in American popular music. The mini concert will feature famous Broadway tunes from songwriters that have their roots in Poland as performed by the Cantors who will be seen in the "100 Voices" film. This will serve to set the stage for special event screening to follow.

In addition to the special Fathom Event, the film will be screened for Academy Award consideration at the AMC Century 15 in Century City, CA and at the Empire 25 Theater on West 42nd Street in New York from September 22 through the 28th.

The Consulate General of the Republic of Poland
in Los Angeles

is proud to announce
the novel by the Polish author

Jerzy Pilch

'A Thousand Peaceful Cities'

available now in bookstores in the USA

Jerzy Pilch is a novelist and newspaper columnist, born in Wisła in 1952. He abandoned his academic career choosing the life of a working writer, and won a dedicated readership during the Martial Law period with the unusually amusing satirical texts that he read aloud at meetings of the Cracow "Na Glos" group. He soon became one of the most popular columnists in "Tygodnik Powszechny", since 1999 in "Polityka", where his texts have a style all their own.

Pilch's first collection of stories - full of grotesque portraits of people and events known to the initiated - seemed like a continuation of his newspaper columns. However, his next collection of prose pieces revealed a narrative talent and skill at building anecdotes that recalled Hrabal or Kundera. Linguistically attractive and unusually funny, Pilch's stories are nevertheless underpinned with nostalgia: their protagonists are searching in vain for the flavor of their own youth and of the friends and women who have receded into the past. This existential pain can be assuaged only by clothing recollection in an anecdotal literary form, which Pilch accomplishes to perfection as he invites his readers to enjoy his ironical-philosophical tales. (source: www.polska2000.pl, Copyright: Stowarzyszenie Willa Decjusza)

For his book "By the powerful angel" Jerzy Pilch received the NIKE'2001 award - the most eminent Polish literary prize. The book "Miasto utrapienia" ("City of woes") has been nominated for the 2005 Nike Award.

" There's a serious question at the center of Jerzy Pilch's comic novel "A Thousand Peaceful Cities": Is political violence ever justified? (...)This is not to say that "A Thousand Peaceful Cities" is autobiographical, although Pilch grew up during the period he describes. More to the point, the book is a testament to the primacy of art, not violence, in the preservation of a culture. Certainly, that idea was essential under the communists, who sought to vilify visionaries as dangerous to the status quo. But if "A Thousand Peaceful Cities" has any larger message, it's that such vigilance is no less essential now."

A Film Unfinished is the story of a movie that was never completed.

At the end of WWII, 60 minutes of raw film, having sat undisturbed in an East German archive, was discovered. Shot by the Nazis in Warsaw in May 1942, and labeled simply "Ghetto," this footage quickly became a resource for historians seeking an authentic record of the Warsaw Ghetto. However, the later discovery of a long-missing reel, inclusive of multiple takes and cameraman staging scenes, complicated earlier readings of the footage. A Film Unfinished presents the raw footage in its entirety for the first time, carefully noting fictionalized sequences (including a staged dinner party) falsely showing "the good life" enjoyed by Jewish urbanites, and probes deep into the making of a now-infamous Nazi propaganda film.

A Film Unfinished, directed by Yael Hersonski,  is a film of enormous importance, documenting some of the worst horrors of our time and exposing the efforts of its perpetrators to propel their agenda and cast it in a favorable light.

One year later, he received an individual award at the International Jazz Competition Jazz Juniors '92 held in Krakow. The Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Los Angeles

invites you to

an informal evening with Polish Theatre Artists including a reading of

Pantofelnik's Suitcase

by Malgorzata Sikorska-Miszczuk

and selections of work by Marcin Liber,

followed by a meet-and-greet with Ms. Sikorska-Miszczuk, Mr. Liber and Wojtek Klass-Szasz.

Wednesday, May 12th at 8:00pm at Art/Works Theatre

The evening organized by the Ghost Road Company.

The reading in English will be directed by Katharine Noon and features Shaughn Buchholz, Kimberly Glann, Christel Joy Johnson, Doug Sutherland, Phil Ward, and Ronald Wingate Jr.

"Pantofelnik's Suitcase" is the winner of the first edition of the nationwide playwriting contest "Metaphors for Reality", organized by Teatr Polski in Poznań.

"Pantofelnik's Suitcase" is the story of Fransua Zako, a Parisian in search of the truth about his father. The only information that his mother has given him is his father's name, and the fact that he died when Fransua was three. One day, the hero, a somewhat buffoonish retiree, heads off to the Holocaust Museum in response to his wife's insistence that he take an interest in something. While there, he unexpectedly finds a suitcase belonging to his father, Leo Pantofelnik, a Jewish concentration camp prisoner gassed by the Nazis during the Second World War. Although the truth that Fransua discovers is cruel and painful, by confronting the truth, by uncovering the extraordinary contents of the suitcase, he is able to discover his own identity, to feel the fullness of life, and to come to terms with his own past and with History.
Sikorska-Miszczuk's play takes the form of a polyphonic ballad about the search for one's own roots - knowledge of which is required to become a complete human being. The suitcase of the play's title is a symbol of the past: it has to be opened so that its contents can be examined and handled, so that one can live happily in the present and future. The author asks a bold question about the legitimacy of cultivating memories of war and extermination, of running museums in former concentration camps which possibly serve only to scratch at old wounds. The uncommonly poetic narration, juxtaposing absurd humor and wordplay with the seriousness of the story's subject, yields a surprising effect. The author's exceptional ear, her skillful use of rhythm, her combination of prose and blank verse, and the precise construction of her dialogs result in a text ideally suited to radio performance.

entitled

"Return to Democracy or Constant Crisis?

Polish Cinema after 1989"

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010 at 7:00PM

at Kane Hall, Walker Ames Room on the UW Campus

During and after the 34th Polish Film Festival, which was held on September 14-19, 2009 in Gdynia, an astonishing thing occurred. People wanted to see Polish movies!!  It was almost impossible for the average viewer to buy tickets for the screenings. Critics celebrated the fact that now they have something to discuss besides what is wrong with the Polish film industry. Some of them even announced the rebirth of "the Polish school." In her presentation Dr. Durys will discuss why Polish national cinema suffered such a long crisis and what contributed to its revival.

Lecture is free and open to the public

Elzbieta Durys Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor at University of Lodz (Poland). Her research interests focus on film studies, anthropology of culture, communication and gender. She is the author of numerous articles on film and coeditor of Wizerunki kobiet i mężczyzn w kulturze (Representing Gender in Culture) (2005), Kino amerykańskie: Dzieła (American Cinema: The Works) (2006), Kino amerykańskie: Twórcy (American Cinema: The Authors) (2007). In 2009 she published a book on John Cassavetes' oeuvre, Mieliśmy tu mały problem... O twórczości Johna Cassavetesa (Just a Little Problem That Came Up... The Works of John Cassavetes). During the academic year 2009-2010 she is a Fulbright scholar conducting her research on American cop cinema at the Department of Radio-Television-Film, University of Texas in Austin.

The Consulate General of the Republic of Poland

announces the concerts of the Polish alternative music group

L.Stadt

at the SXSW® 2010 Festival in Austin, TX

Wednesday, March 17th at 9:00 p.m., Elysium, 705 Red River Street, Austin, TX
Sunday, March 21st at 12:00 a.m. at Dirty Dog Bar, 505 E 6th St, Austin, TX

lstadt

L.Stadt hails from Lodz, Poland. They played their first concert on a club stage during the famous 2003 Camerimage Festival. L.Stadt electrifies audiences with their atypical blend of sounds and powerful delivery, as well as their thoughtful lyrics and piercing vocals. Their music is melodic, yet critics are at a loss when trying to pigeonhole their style, which is evidenced by one French critic describing their music as alternative-pop-garage-noise-rock.

In the summer of 2004, they played the Class Rock Festival in Aix en Provence, France and their performance was included on the accompanying DVD. In 2005, they graced the stage of the prestigious Festiwal Czterech Kultur [Four Cultures Festival] in Lodz.

From the 374 recordings submitted for the OFF-scena competition sponsored by Radio Trójka, Przekrój weekly and Onet.pl, 50 were selected by the jury and 4 were awarded - L.Stadt was among the winners.

After debut they have played over 100 club and outdoor shows in Poland and abroad, including Lithuania, Germany, England, Croatia and Serbia. On 4 July 2008, L.STADT opened the Tent Stage at Poland's largest festival, OPEN'ER, and in September, they rocked the Young Talent stage at the PKOBP LONDON LIVE festival at Wembley Arena in London. On 13 June 2009 they played at biggest Lithuanian Festival Be2gether and 28th of August they performed on ViertelFest in Bremen.

The band is also an ambassador of the city of Lodz in its efforts to be named the European Capital of Culture 2016.

http://musicplpt.blogspot.com/:
"Their music, more than before, is a colourful sound pallet, drifting among the likes of the Brian Ferry, Leonard Cohen, The The, Velvet Underground, Robert Palmer, Beck and Damon Albarn's band, Blur.
Combining pop and soul scented melodies with more experimental rock tunes, guitar driven tracks with drums meet percussion side clashes, Prince look-a-like whispered sensite sexy chorus with strong and deep cavernous vocals, Lukasz Lach, Adam Lewartowski, Radek Bolewski and Andrzej Sieczkowski deliver within this L.Stadt one of the most mature debuts I've seen around. Influences and comparisons aside, this is a hell of a debut!!!!
This is a record that will have you playing it loud and repeatedly. Songs like March, with its percussion-set tempo (this band plays with drums and percussion simultaneously) and the soulful chorus, the keyboard-driven melody swirls and Beck inspired backgrounds of Macca, the low-paced cinematic pop hymn Wait, the happy merry-go-rounds Londyn and Akademia and, last but not least, the sonorous exercise at track 13, will keep sounding inside your head after the first time you listen to them..... and in case you catch them live, then, it will even be worse...

From its inception, L.Stadt consists of:
Lukasz Lach - guitar, vocals, piano
Adam Lewartowski - bass
Andrzej Sieczkowski - percussion, pads
Radek Bolewski - drums

The Consulate General of the Republic of Poland
in Los Angeles

announces the concert of the Polish alternative music group

Pustki (the Empties)

at the SXSW® 2010 Festival in Austin, TX

Wednesday, March 17th at 1:00 a.m., The Tap Room at Six, 311 Colorado St Austin, TX

Pustki

Pustki (The Empties) perform music which is emotional, unpredictable and of a noble simplicity. They play songs which are very melodic on one hand, and raw, on the other. The archaic sound of instruments may remind us of the rebellious groups of 60 and 70, but the compositions and arrangements sound quite modern. The four released albums gave them quite a huge following among fans in Poland. Another face of the band are soundtracks and music composed for theatre plays. The band describes its work as the MUSIC OF THE EASTERN EUROPE, their manifesto which found some followers among Polish groups.
First album of the band, entitled "Studio Pustki", was released in 2001 and distributed also in the USA and Czech Republic. The CD got very good reviews and the group was considered by Polish press as one of the most promising new bands.
In June 2004 after releasing album entitled "8 ohm" the group toured with No Means No as a special guest of the legendary band. In the autumn 2008 latest regular album by Pustki was published, entitled "Koniec Kryzysu". It appeared to be the most successful of the band's releases, containing several hit singles and having the best reception from the music press in the history of the band. The journalists emphasized sophisticated arrangements, catchy melodies and interesting lyrics, full of intelligent word plays. The album was chosen as the best album of the year by an alternative music magazine Pulp and by Program 3, a radio channel broadcast by the Polish public broadcaster, Polskie Radio (Polish Radio). It was also nominated to the Fryderyk, the annual award in Polish music (its status in the Polish public can be compared to the American Grammy and the UK's BRIT Award).
Until today Pustki played more than 300 shows in Poland and abroad (France, Germany, Ukraine, England), recorded 5 albums, composed music for five theatre plays and two movies soundtracks. The band is one of the main elements of Polish independent music scene.

Reverse dir. by Borys Lankosz

and the exhibition

Escapes: Polish Art in the Communist Era

January 30 - March 21, 2010, Laband Art Gallery,

Loyola Marymount University, One LMU Drive, MS 8346, Los Angeles, CA 90045

Set in the 1950s, during the peak of Stalinist terror in communist Poland, Reverse is a black comedy about three generations of women living together in a claustrophobic apartment in Warsaw. 30 year-old Sabina is presented with a string of unsuitable candidates to marry by her determined mother and savvy but ailing grandmother. No suitor peaks Sabina's interest until one night a mysterious handsome stranger rescues her from a mugging and sweeps her off her feet. Their romance takes a dark turn when he asks her to spy on her boss, unleashing sinister events.

Reverse received 11 awards at the 2009 Gdynia Polish Film Festival, including Best Film (Golden Lions for the film and producer). The film earned the FIPRESCI Award (Best First Film from Eastern Europe) at the Warsaw Film Festival.

Admission free, seating limited.

Escapes spans four decades of Polish art created under communist rule. As the country was being redefined socially and politically, artists were seeking new visions.  At times their creativity was greatly restricted by the state while at other times, they found ways to express their opposition. Drawn primarily from the Bohdan "Bo" W. Oppenheim and Sylwestrowicz Collection as well as the holdings of the Center of the Study of Political Graphics and the Warszawa Restaurant, the exhibition includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and posters.

The gallery will be open from 5-6:45pm before the screening of the film.

TOV

a new dance theater work by the acclaimed Polish theater group

Stowarzyszenie Teatralne CHOREA (CHOREA Theatre Association)

and

Los Angeles-based artist ROSANNA GAMSON

Chorea

Thursday, March 18 - Saturday, March 20 | 8:30 pm

Sunday, March 21 | 3:00 pm

Wednesday, March 24 - Saturday March 27 | 8:30 pm

Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater, 631 W 2nd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012

Choreographed and directed by Los Angeles-based artist Rosanna Gamson, Tov features a live vocal score created byacclaimed Polish theater group Stowarzyszenie Teatralne CHOREA (CHOREA Theatre Association), and lighting and set design by Christopher Kuhl. Developed in the US and Poland with artists from both countries, Tov premieres with a bi-national cast at the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater Thursday, March 18, 2010 through Saturday, March 27, 2010.

Deftly weaving together intense physical movement, spoken word, vocal music, and the "theater laboratory" ensemble techniques originated by Jerzy Grotowski, Rosanna Gamson stages a profusely evocative dance drama around the story of the tarpan horse--an extinct species of Eurasian wild horse that was genetically "reassembled" in the 1930s through back-breeding of domestic horses. The Los Angeles choreographer braids this allegory of regeneration with reflections on the history of her own Polish-Jewish ancestors, horse traders from Szczecin, and the fate of Polish Jewry. Tov takes its title from "Gamzu l'tovah" ("This too is for the good"), a favorite saying of one of Gamson's forebears, Talmudic scholar Nachum ish Gamzu, who found God's hand even in tragedy. The full-evening work features a cast of seventeen performers from Poland and the U.S., with text spoken and sung in Hebrew, Polish, English, Yiddish, Bulgarian and German.

CHOREA continues the work started by two groups in the Gardzienice Center of Theatrical Practice: The Ancient Orchestra and The Labyrinth Dance Formation. CHOREA's own, unique method of work is based in uniting dance, music and lyrics in one organic action. After three years of intense exploration internationally, CHOREA found its permanent residence in historic Lodz and was instrumental in creating a new cultural center in the year 2007: Lodz's Fabryka Sztuki (Art Factory).

Members of CHOREA Theatre Association come to the United States for the first time to collaborate on a new work with Los Angeles-based dance theater company Rosanna Gamson/World Wide. As part of that collaboration, CHOREA is conducting an intensive training with members of RGWW and invited local performers that has been taught in Eastern Europe, the UK, Greece, Germany, France and the Netherlands. With the goal of integrating voice, body, text and rhythm, the workshop is based on CHOREA's international investigation of both ancient and contemporary theater forms. The physical training uses acrobatics, complex exercises in rhythm, partner and choral work, as well as singing and extended vocal techniques. The workshop culminates in this one-time, free public event demonstrating CHOREA's training practices and sharing their theater work.

Following a four-year period of collaboration with Jerzy Grotowski's Teatr Laboratorium, Tomasz Rodowicz became a founding member and Music Director of The Association of Theatrical Practices Gardzienice (Gardzienice) in 1977 with Wlodzimierz Staniewski. Gardzienice is the internationally recognized theater group that sought to continue Grotowski's work as he moved away from theatrical productions. CHOREA is known for its sung performances, strenuous physical and vocal training, and anthropological fieldwork.

Poland's Academy Award® entry for Best Foreign Language Film

Reverse

by Borys Lankosz

Friday, January 15 at 7:00pm
Melnitz Hall 1409 (UCLA) - James Bridges Theater, 405 Hilgard Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90095

Director Borys Lankosz in person for a Q&A with Roman Koropeckyj (UCLA Slavic Department/ Associate Professor of Slavic Languages & Literatures), and Joanna Kozinska-Frybes (Consul General of the Republic of Poland);  sponsored by UCLA International Institute, Center for European and Eurasian Studies

Winner 11 awards at the 2009 Gdynia Polish Film Festival; FIPRESCI Award, Warsaw Film Festival

During the peak of Stalinist terror in communist Poland, 30 year-old Sabina is presented with a string of unsuitable candidates to marry by her determined mother and savvy but ailing grandmother.  One night a mysterious handsome stranger rescues her from a mugging and sweeps her off her feet.  Their romance takes a dark turn when he asks her to spy on her boss, unleashing sinister events.

"Rich with references to Polish culture and cinema history, the genre-juggling feature debut of prize-winning documaker Borys Lankosz is clever, complex and spiked with a special kind of black humor.... pic boasts pitch-perfect performances from a stellar cast.  Told from a female perspective, the elegant screenplay by literary talent Andrzej Bart revels in allusions, jokes and paradoxes, taking clichés about life in the Stalinist era and turning them inside out." - Alissa Simon, Variety

DIRECTOR and WRITER: Borys Lankosz
CAST: Agata Buzek, Krystyna Janda, Anna Polony, Marcin Dorocinski, Adam Woronowicz, Bronislaw Wroclawski
In Polish with English subtitles, 101 min

Reverse by Borys Lankosz

A story about women, set in the present and in 1950s Warsaw. The main character is Sabina, a quiet, shy woman who has just turned thirty and lacks a man in her life. Her mother knows all about it and tries at all costs to find her daughter a good candidate for a husband. The situation is controlled by grandmother, an eccentric lady with a sharp tongue from whom no secret can be concealed. Successive admirers arrive at the pre-war tenement where the women live, but Sabina is interested in none of them. One day, appearing out of nowhere, comes the charming, intelligent, and terribly good-looking Bronislaw. His presence sparks off a series of unexpected events revealing the darker side of the women's nature. Reverse is the Polish official submission to the Oscar's® award 2009 in the foreign film category.

Escapes: Polish Art in the Communist Era

January 30 - March 21, 2010

Laband Art Gallery, Loyola Marymount University, One LMU Drive, MS 8346, Los Angeles, CA 90045

Escapes spans four decades of Polish art created under communist rule. As the country was being redefined socially and politically, artists were seeking new visions. At times their creativity was greatly restricted by the state while at other times, they found ways to express their opposition. Drawn primarily from the Bohdan "Bo" W. Oppenheim and Sylwestrowicz Collection as well as the holdings of the Center of the Study of Political Graphics and the Warszawa Restaurant, the exhibition includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and posters.

the visit recommendation for Gdansk
made by

seattletimes

Gdansk

In its online edition The Seattle Times introduced the city of Gdansk. The centuries old city was described as the place of "a powerful history" and "like a Fabergé egg."

The article entitled "Exploring the powerful history of Gdansk" by Rick Steves, presents it as the place, where one can see "two of the most important sites in the 20th-century history: the spit of land where World War II began, and the Shipyard where the Cold War started its long and gradual final act."

There is a description of Gdansk Old Town with Dluga Street, its picturesque narrow, ornately decorated mansions and red brick churches as well as famous "milk bars" with Polish delicious simple cuisine.

Historical outline for Gdansk covers the Solidarity movement creation and famous scaling the shipyard wall by Lech Walesa. Nowadays city of Gdansk offers modern posh condos and shopping malls, and "a futuristic stadium shaped like a translucent glob of amber" being built to host Euro 2012 soccer tournament.

Poland's capital will be the major place for the Chopin 2010 celebrations. Year 2010 is the 200th anniversary of Chopin's birth, who died in Paris in 1849, but left instructions for his heart to be returned to Warsaw for interment.

Seventieth Anniversary of the II World War Outbreak

On the eve of the seventieth anniversary of II World War outbreak it needs to be reminded that Poland was the only country to fight in the European theatre of war from the very first to the very last day of the greatest armed conflict in the history of mankind.

The war began with Poland's invasion - on September 1st, 1939, the Nazi Germany attacked the country from the North and West; on September 17th the Soviet Union marched into the Eastern parts of it. Both invaders acted in concert, upon the Ribbentrop - Molotov Treaty (concluded on August 23rd). The allies of Poland - the Great Britain and France - declared war upon Germany on September 3rd, but the efficient military actions were taken only months after that (the so-called "Phony War"). The Soviet Union joined the anti-Nazi alliance only in the summer of 1941, when invaded by Germany. The United States, although they gave a lot of significant material aid, joined the military actions in December 1941 when assaulted by Japan and when Germany declared war upon them.

Determination and perseverance are the most significant features of the Polish contribution to the defeat of Germany. Despite the severe defeat in 1939, the Poles formed five more armies, including four in exile: in France in 1939, in the United Kingdom in the summer of 1940 (after the defeat and capitulation of France), and twice in the USSR in 1941. Those were the army of Gen. Anders that fought later in the South of Europe, and the one that emerged in 1943 and later fought at the Red Army's side. The fifth Polish army, created at the end of September 1939, was the conspiratorial armed force in the occupied territory. Within the entire period of war the very important "silent front" - the intelligence - also existed.  Up to 2 million Poles served since September 1st, 1939 to May 8th, 1945 in all the Polish military formations - regular armies, partisan troops and underground forces. In the final stage of war the Polish troops amounted to some 600 thousand soldiers (infantry, armored troops, aircraft and navy) on all the European fronts. In the summer of 1944, while commencing regular military struggle against the retreating Germans, the armed underground numbered more than 300 thousands sworn soldiers. It can be concluded that Poland put in the field the fourth greatest Allied army.

Polish soldiers were not invited to participate in the victory parades in London and Moscow in 1945. That was meaningful - Poland was more an object of mutual relations than a partner of the Great Powers. However, the Western Allies many times emphasized the heroism and determination of the Polish soldiers and the fact that Poland was an extremely valuable ally, therefore belonging to the winners of the war. Many Poles thought, and still think, that it was a "bitter victory" as the Polish state that emerged after the war was harmed by subordinating it to the Soviet Union.

FREEDOM BORN IN POLAND - Where Eastern European democracy started...

Freedom

It has already been 20 years since the first semi-free Parliamentary elections in Poland took place. That was the turning point for democracy in the former Soviet Union block. Sooner or later all the participating countries freed themselves and started their way towards the new life.

What happened on June 4th, 2009, had been preceded by a number of events which led to the Solidarity movement birth. But free Poland did not start at the polls on that very day. It had started with the workers shoot to death in the coal-mines of the Silesia as well as Polish shipyards and while students at the major Polish universities protested and were imprisoned or killed by the secret service. Those were the moments, when the political and social awareness of Poles was born. It needed a couple of years to bring the fruit - free and democratic Poland.

Wieliczka chosen to be one of 40 recommended destinations all over the world by the

Los Angeles Times

Kopalnia Soli w Wieliczce

Readers of the Los Angeles Times have chosen Wieliczka to be one of the forty "must" travel destinations all over the world. That was mainly attributed to the magnificent Wieliczka Salt Mine and its art deep below the ground.

According to UNESCO, "The historic salt mine in Wieliczka lies on nine levels, its major shafts, and 3,000 chambers stretch for the total of 186 miles, reaching the depth of over 1,000 feet." American travelers visited the Chapel of Blessed Kinda, more than 300 feet below ground. Astonished by the chapel's chandeliers consisting of dangling salt crystals, floor carved as if it were tile and a huge number of bas-reliefs, including Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper" carved in salt, full size, they wholeheartedly recommend visiting Wieliczka for extraordinary artistic pleasures.

After Warsaw, Krakow and the Bialowieza Forest, Wieliczka is the fourth place in Poland chosen by American travelers and professional globetrotters to be a must while in the country.
